1571, 1598 & 1600 subsidies transcribed from "East Hampshire Lay Subsidy Assessments 1558-1606"

(Alton, Basingstoke and Portsdown divisions)

by Douglas F Vick, privately published 1988

1586 subsidy transcribed from The Hampshire Lay Subsidy Rolls, 1586

Edited by Roger C Davey

Hampshire Record Series Volume IV, 1981

1621 subsidy transcribed from The Crondall Records Part 1

by Francis Joseph Baigent, Hampshire Record Society, 1891

1603, 1620, 1625 and 1640 subsidies transcribed by PJT from the Herriard Collection documents in the Hampshire Record Office

  • 1603 ref 44M69/G4/1/11
  • 1620 ref 44M69/G4/1/12
  • 1625 ref 44M69/G4/1/14
  • 1640 ref 44M69/G4/1/18

There are still more to come including 1626 (44M69/G4/1/16), and 44M69/G4/1/15 - which is not 'early 17th century' as stated since it names Sir Richard Ryves, Mrs Sarah Ball, Mr Edmond Brice & Widow Gary, Mr Willm Cave, and Willm Smallpeece. It is therefore be possible to date it very precisely to between 17 Apr 1670 and 25 Aug 1671. This document was therefore produced for the Subsidy for 'the king's extraordinary occasions' granted by the 'Cavalier Parliament' on 6 March 1671. Since this subsidy was a tax "to be assessed on income, wealth, and debts, payable by all spiritual and temporal persons, regardless of estate or degree" this document could prove to be extremely interesting in assessing the relative wealth of potters working in the Blackwater Valley at that time.
