MONTEAGLE FARM IN THE CENSUS
page created by Peter Tipton, March 2009
In the 7 censuses taken in Yateley between 1841 and 1901 there were nearly 150 entries for persons (men, women and children) having an address "Monteagle" or one of its variants. Exactly halfway through, in 1871, there was a hiatus: Monteagle Farm was completely unoccupied. The only family in 1871 to have Monteagle as their address was that of James & Ann Goddard, and they probably lived at Monteagle Cottage.
Census enumerators in different years appear to have different interpretations about the geographical extent of the Monteagle address. Those in 1861 and 1891 each included 7 other families additional to the family living at Monteagle Farm. There were thus entries for 21 families spread over the 7 censuses. It is not possible to identify anyone resident at Monteagle Farm in 1841. The heads of family are given in the table:

From these historical sources the complete list of owners and occupiers of Monteagle Farm has been compiled from 1760 to 1920. In addition some of the farm workers from 1851 to 1901 may have been identified. If these latter families were not actually employed on the farm they were living close enough to be identified with it by the census enumerators
