Robert WHITE, wool merchant of Farnham, died 1467

A Translation of the Will of Robert WHITE (senior) of Yateley and Farnham

Ref 21 Godwyn, but now on PRO ref no PROB 11 5/21. proved 14 Nov 1467

IN THE NAME OF GOD. AMEN. In the year from the Incarnation of our Lord One

thousand four hundred and sixty seven on the sixteenth day of the month of october

I ROBERT WHITE senior of Farnham in the diocese of Winchester sound of mind

though sick in body make my testament containing my last will in this manner.

FIRST I leave my soul to GOD the Omnipotent Father the Blessed Trinity and all

the Saints and my body to be buried within the chapel of the Blessed Mary next to

the great chancel in the Church of Farnham aforesaid.

ITEM I leave to the mother church of Winchester 6s. 8p. ITEM I leave to one

Priest to celebrate and pray for my soul and for the souls of my father mother

wife sons benefactors and my friends for 30 years after the day of my death 30 mks

ITEM I wish that every year on my anniversary for the aforesaid 30 years shall be

distributed among the priests and others at time of divine service 6s 8d

ITEM I wish that on the same day be distributed among poor people 13s 4p

ITEM I leave to the work and repair of the church of Farnham aforesaid 10 marks

ITEM I leave to the church of Yatteley one pair of vestments of the price of £4 or

5 marks ITEM I leave to the church of Warnberough one pair of Vestments of same price

ITEM I leave to the church of Farnborough one pair of Vestments of the agreed price

ITEM I leave to the repair of divers muddy and broken roads first beginning at the

hill near the cross called Froyle Crosse as far as the end of the town of Farnham

wherever is the greatest need £10. ITEM I leave to the repair of the highway

towards Farnborough beginning beyond the house of Richard Hale 10 marks

ITEM I leave to any priest who comes to pray for my soul on the day of my obit 12d

ITEM I leave to any clerk thus coming 4d ITEM I leave to any lights in the church

of Farnham aforesaid 6s 8d ITEM I leave £20 to be divided and distributed

among poor people for the love of Jesus Christ and the salvation of my soul

but particularly that known and local poor people of the parish of Farnham aforesaid

whose poverty is well known may be better and for the future rumunerated

ITEM I leave £20 for the mending and distribution of linen and woollen clothing

between the poor people of the aforesaid parish and in the neighbourhood at the

discretion of the executors

ITEM I leave to ROBERT son of John my son £20 I leave to RICHARD son of the said

John £20 ITEM I leave to JOHN son of the son of the said John £20 ITEM I leave

to MARGARET daughter of the aforesaid John £20 I leave to JOAN daughter of the

aforesaid John £20 And if it should happen that one or other of the aforesaid

children shall die before tha age of eighteen years in that case I wish that the

aforesaid money of the aforesaid children be released and the income from the

shares thus assigned and equally divided between the other children aforesaid and

thus fixed until the last And if it happens that all the aforesaid children viz

ROBERT RICHARD JOHN MARGARET and JOHANNA shall die then I wish that all the

aforesaid money assigned above to the oft mentioned children be disposed of for

my soul and for the aforesaid souls according to the discretion of my executors

Agnes Sweve of my houshold £10 ITEM I leave to Robert Wyden 5 marks ITEM I

I leave to Robert Honer 40s ITEM I leave to Thomas Babbe 40s ITEM I leave to

Robert Poynett 40s ITEM I leave to John Kynchant of my houshold 20s ITEM i

leave to the (luae?) 40s ITEM I leave to Anne Dyke 40s ITEM I leave to

John Grover of my household 6s 8d ITEM I leave to John Hoker 6s 8d ITEM I

leave to John Bussebridge my servant 13s 4d ITEM I leave to Richard Bayon my cook

(literally 'kitchen servant') 3s 4d ITEM I leave to the parish clerk of Farnham

aforesaid 6s 8d

The rest of all my ggods not my legacies or paid for my debts I give and

leave to John Yong Citizen and Alderman of the City of London, Joan White my

daughter Master Richard Newbrigge Vicar of Farnham aforesaid and William Boylett

Citizen and Clothier of the said City of London whom I constitute and ordain

Executors of this my testament that they having the eyes of GOD before them shall

make ordain and dispose of my aforesaid goods for the benefitof my soul and as may

seem best advantageous and expedient to them In witness of which I have affixed

my seal to these presents These being my witnesses PERCIVAL DYKER THOMAS STONE

and others DATED AT FARNHAM aforesaid the day and year above written

This is the last will of Robert White of Farnham That is to say First he willed

and declared that all his hosehold and husbandrie should stand hoole as it stode tyme

of his death and his son John to have and occupie the same to his own proper use

Also he willed and declared that all such men as wold complayne of any wrong or

injuries lawfully proved bee of ye same after the discretion of his executors bee

peacable heard duly content and satisfied

The above written statement was proved before the Lord of Lambeth Together with

the last will aforesaid on 14th day of November in the year of our Lord One thousand

four hundred and sixty seven and approved etc and administration of all and singular

the goods of the aforesaid deceased wheresoever they are within the province of

Canterbury and the jurisdiction over the districts of the Church was granted to the

executors named in the said Testament who were sworn to well administer etc and to

render a full inventory etc before the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary (The

Purification) next coming and (render) a full account for approval and Registry etc

by the Reverend Father Eilliam, By the grace of God Bishop of Winchester formally

make revoked nullified etc
