Winchester College Records - MONGER

Transcribed by Peter Tipton from Winchester College Muniments, Sheila Himsworth

During a visit to Hampshire Record Office yesterday (23 May 2007) Suzanne Foster, HRO archivist, and archivist to Winchester College, showed me how to find references to families in the calendar of the Winchester Muniments. There are two potters listed in the index: George Monger of Ash, and William Harmon of Botley. Surprisingly the former purchased a property from the latter. Even more surprisingly George Monger was convicted of murder, and his property in Ash - mentioned in the 1613 will of George Monger, woodbroker of Ash - was escheated to Winchester College ie forfeited to the College as a result of the felony.

I have rearranged the items by date order.
