What is the size of Yateley Common?

The first mention I can find of the acreage for the entire common is in the Tithe Apportionment of 1844. No 675 on the Tithe Map is 'Yately Common' of 1,189 acres 0 rods and 21 perches. Darby Green (today part of the same unit of registered common) was given as 24 acres 0 rods and 9 perches. To compare with the size of today‘s registered common we have to add the two together to get almost 1,214 acres.

Interestingly the very first entry in the Register of Common Land held by Hampshire County Council pursuant to the Commons Registration Act 1965 reads:

The tract of about 1,218 acres called Yateley Common in the parishes of Yateley, Hawley and Hartley Wintney, Hampshire as marked with a green verge line inside the boundary on sheets 12, 32 and 35 of the register map and distinguished by this register unit (CL24). Registered in consequence of application No.54 (in the Rights section) made 11th May 1967 by Mr. Henry Thomas Dodd, Coombesbury Farm, Boxford, Newbury, Berkshire.

The close tally between the two acreages (123 years apart) makes me wonder whether one was taken from the other or whether a recent survey was made. These two acreages are about 493 hectares.

The Common Lands of Hampshire by L Ellis Taverner gives the total size of Yateley Common as 1,240 acres and Darby Green as 26 acres. This gives a total of 512 hectares.

A recent survey (1996-9) by the University of Aberyswyth for DEFRA of the common lands of Hampshire gives the registered area of 493.12 hectares for unit CL24, and 4.41 hectares for CL29 (probably in error for CL28), and 0.94 hectares for CL48 -- all part of Yateley Common. The survey gives the calculated area of CL24 as 493.00 hectares, CL29 as 4.40 hectares and CL48 was not surveyed.

So to a very near approximation Yateley Common's area is 500 hectares.
