A 16th century connection with a Lambeth Potter
Yes there do seem to be connections between potters working in Farnborough and London. I have just downloaded and transcribed the will of Richard Dee, potter of Lambeth, Surrey, died 1593. He owned copyhold lands in Farnborough which is were, at his death, 'in John Hampton's handes'. He also made a bequest to John Nash, son of John Nash of Yateley. He bequeathed one of his wheels to John Hampton, so the latter is a potter working in Farnborough.
Richard Dee even appoints 'Mr Dee the Preacher' to be one of his overseers (I can hardly bear to think about that!).
I came across Richard Dee by searching The National Archives wills database for London and Surrey potters to see if I could find any 'Yateley surnames'. The surname Dee occurs in the Yateley Lay Subsidies - Christopher Dee paid tax in 1603, 1621, 1625, and 1626. Christopher Dee also provided a Corselet (an armed man wearing body armour) at a muster on 6 Sep 1625 commanded by Captain Thomas Allen Esq of Yateley. He provided a different man at a muster on 14 Sep 1638 under Captain William Carrick Esq. of Minley. Christopher Dee 'an aged father' was buried at St Peters, Yateley 10 May 1652. After Christopher‘s death William Dee paid poor rates from 1656 until he died in 1669. His house had 5 hearths.
There are other London potters with Yateley surnames, but I could not resist looking at this one first.
