More Gunners from Frimley

Answer QB82: from Mary Bennett, Surrey Heath Museum 20 Feb 2008

Phil Stevens has transcribed all the early manorial rolls for Frimley that are extant at Woking. What I do have here is a copy of Ancient and Modern History of Frimley by Henry W Aldred - published 1896. From memory the early manorial rolls he quotes are not at Chobham.

There is one in his book, a rent roll for Michaelmas 1596 - part of which gives the Gunner's in the village. They include John Gunner, Thomas Gunner, Robert Gunner for Rance's land, John Gunner the elder, William Gunner for Breaches land, Longhurst and Wyld Eade, Richard Gunner for Buckhurst etc and John Gunner of Frimley.

Buckhurst is now the name of a road in Frimley Green, but it used to be a farm near to the green at Frimley Green. In a later rent roll (undated but believed to be early 17th century) George Gunner is at Buckhurst. You will find a mention of this farm in my book as they had a malt mill there. Richard does not appear after the 1596 rent roll.

Please let me know if I can be of further help
