SURREY HEATH LOCAL HISTORY CLUB PROGRAMME 2005 – 6

 

Meetings are held at the Adult Education Centre, France Hill Drive, Camberley, in the Carson Suite at 7.30 pm, on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, unless otherwise stated.

Saturday 3rd September 2005 in Bagshot Square, 2-4pm

 

The Reading of the Trafalgar Dispatch – in Bagshot, one of the original stops en route to the Admiralty, commemorating Nelson’s victory over the French. Morris dancing, a band, displays and fancy dress, plus the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

 

Saturday 10th September 2005 Heritage Open Day – all day but various times.

 

Visit the Old Police Station, London Road, Bagshot and/or the Surrey Heath Museum for the Poulter drawings and the Obelisk. Additionally Frimley Park Mansion, St Anne’s Church, St Michael’s Church and the Old Thai House will be participating in Heritage Open Days 8th -11th September. Ken Clarke is conducting groups to the Obelisk. Ring the Surrey Heath Museum for details – 01276 707 283.

 

1 Wednesday 14th September 2005 at the Archaeology Centre, Bagshot, 7.30pm.

 

‘Fort Royal at RMAS’: an illustrated talk about the beginnings of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst by Phil Stevens. There will also be a viewing of the latest research, from Iron Age metallurgy to medieval bread oven technology, and the archaeological displays of the Trust. Parking is behind the Centre or at Pantiles.

‘Two Centuries of Bagshot Photographs’- a presentation of slides by Henry Stansbrook to Surrey Heath Archaeological & Heritage Trust.

2 Wednesday 12th October 2005 The first of the Carson Suite sessions at 7.30pm.

 

‘Normandy and Christmas Pie’: an investigation of the history of Normandy by Peter Blakiston to explain the origins of these names. This is an area of history perhaps less familiar to members despite Normandy’s medieval connections with Henley and Ash.

 

3 Wednesday 9th November 2005.

’Traditional Trades in Surrey Heath’ an illustrated talk by Mary Bennett based on how people managed to make a living when there were no large rivers to support industry and no natural assets like a rich soil or mineral seam to provide employment. Mary ranges from the obvious such as farming to the less well-known trades such as glove making and weaving.

Christmas seems an appropriate time to hear about ‘Surrey Heath Characters’. Ken Clarke will lead the review of unforgettable residents and notable eccentrics with the help of members. Please let Ken know of any you think should be included. Punch and mince pies as usual.

 

 

5 Wednesday 11th January 2006.

 

‘The Haven’ – Dr Richard Johnson of Yateley Society, with the help of Mrs Elizabeth Tipton, will tell the story of The Haven, Yateley, an unmarried mothers home run by the Baptist Union from 1945 until 1970, using photographs from a fund-raising slideshow. About 1,750 babies were born there, many of whom were adopted by local families. Maps and photographs tell the story of Yateley's last now demolished mansion house and its owners from the Edwardian period to 1945. The lecture concludes with moving recent testimonies from Haven mothers and babies.

 

Wednesday 18th January at Surrey Heath Museum at 7.30pm

We have been invited as a group to visit the ‘Built to last’ display for a look at Surrey Heath’s built environment and architecture. Who were the builders and what are the street name connections? What were the links with Bournemouth? How does one explain the success of Charles Church?

‘Diaries’ from Sam Pepys and Edward Ryde to the present day. What can they tell us about local history? Members’ contributions led by Anthony Greenstreet.

 

7 Wednesday 8th March 2006.

‘18th century Surrey Heath’ by Phil Stevens. Will this provide the occasion for the publication of Volume IV?

 

8 Wednesday 12th April 2006.

 

‘For the helth of my sowle: piety & charity in the Woking area 1480 – 1580’ by Alan Crosby. See details in the February Newsletter This will be in a classroom, not the Carson Suite.

9 Wednesday 17th May 2006 at Surrey Heath Museum at 7.30pm.

 

‘Local Naturalists - Maxwell Knight and George Lodge’ a talk by Bernard Baverstock and view of the display celebrating the 60 years of Camberley Natural History Society existence.

 

10 Wednesday 7th June 2006.

 

‘A visit to Wanborough’ famous for its Roman temples and medieval chapel, barn built in 1388 by Waverley monks, and manor house. See details in the February Newsletter.

11 Wednesday 12th July 2006.

 

A walk round Odiham led by Mary Bennett. See details in the February Newsletter.
